Hānuere | JanuaryOur monthly newsletter serves as a platform to connect the mahi of our team with insights from our policy groups, wider membership, and sector relationships. Through this lens, we aim to highlight how these combined efforts shape policy and influence decision-making.Normally, each issue is structured around our four primary focus areas of ‘Tō Tātou Rāngai | Our Sector’, ‘Tamariki | Children’, ‘Kaumātua | Older People’, and ‘Ōritetanga me te whakaurunga | Equity & Inclusion’, with each providing insights into current hilights, future pathways, and reflecting on our influence. For the beginning of this new year we wanted to instead take a quick look back at 2024, showcasing our work as a team and in each of our policy groups. We hope that this reminds you of the resources we have available to you and gives context to the work we plan to undertake in 2025 alongside our membership. As always, we welcome your feedback and thank you for your continued commitment to this work.We would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the passing of Dame Tariana Turia. Her commitment to whānau, to equity, to justice, and to her people leaves a legacy for all of us. Moe mai rā. Our New Kaiwhakahaere Matua | Chief Operating OfficerFollowing Nikki Hurst’s departure in November, we are thrilled to announce the appointment of our new CEO, Alicia Sudden, who will be joining us in February. Alicia has a wealth of experience from her time in government, working for various MPs across several political parties. She has previous NGO experience, working as Manager of International Programmes at Sexual Health Aotearoa. Her extensive advocacy and public engagement work, including presenting at the United Nations, will bring a sound skill set to this role. We are excited to see what the team can accomplish with her at the helm. ![]() A Year of Engagements A significant part of our role is responding to government through consultations and submissions. This work ensures that the views of our membership and the people they serve are presented to government when they are making decisions. We consider it a great privilege to be the vehicle for our member’s concerns and ideas into this process. All our submissions are available on our website, but the following shows an overview of the thirty seven responses to government we produced in the 2024 year. ![]() ![]() The NZCCSS Guide to Government – Demystifying Democracy We are excited to have launched our Guide to Government series in our previous newsletter, with the first guide “Writing a Submission” released alongside our work to encourage engagement with the Principles of the Treaty of Waitangi Bill. ![]() Future topics in this series include a look at the makeup of government, the process of a Bill becoming Law, writing a petition and the Parliamentary Financial Cycle. We are excited to be able to deliver these resources in each of our upcoming Weaving Policy newsletters. Have a topic request? Is there a part of government that seems confusing to you? Would understanding a certain part of the process help you in your work? Please email [email protected] to make your suggestion for future Guide to Government topics. ![]() ![]() Te Kōrero mō ngā Tamariki – A Voice for Middle Childhood May 2024 saw the initial launch of our landmark report Te Kōrero mō ngā Tamariki, the first report in an Aotearoa New Zealand context to assess and celebrate Middle Childhood. Children aged 5-12 are often left to schools, with little outside support designed to reflect their unique age-based development. Senior Analyst Melanie Wilson has compiled a comprehensive report to combat this hole in understanding. As for our other context report, Te Kōrero mō ngā Kaumātua, we used Te Whariki as a framework to analyse this stage. ![]() Covering Kotahitanga | Holistic Development, Whānau Tangata | Family and Community, Ngā Hononga | Relationships, and Whakamana | Empowerment, this report is filled with links, tables and diagrams to help expand the understanding of 5-12 year olds. The report concludes with an overview of areas that we and our membership think require focus, as we move forward to develop a national understanding and appreciation of Middle Childhood. Interested in having Mel present to your team or at one of your events? We are eager to expand the knowledge around Middle Childhood throughout the sector. If your team would benefit from a discussion with the lead analyst on this work, please email [email protected] to explore her availability. ![]() ![]() The Aotearoa Aged Care Action Plan – Sector Sourced and Sector Endorsed NZCCSS has been a champion for the wellbeing of older people since its inception. July 2024 saw the next stage of our advocacy work head out into the sector in the form of the Aotearoa Aged Care Action Plan. After a year of iterative and collaborative work with members and the wider Aged Care sector, Senior Analyst Rachel Mackay was able to construct a clear and actionable plan to improve the quality of life for those engaging with aged care in Aotearoa. The nine objectives, covering everything from better funding to better access to technology and allied health, were created in a highly collaborative process which led to the plan being referred to as ‘sector sourced and sector endorsed‘, with a large number of respected organisations adding their tohu before publication. ![]() Across 2025, we will be tracking the progress of the sector across our plan, and inviting others to join us as we continue to advocate for the wellbeing of older people across Aotearoa. Interested in having Rachel present to your team or at one of your events? If your team is interested in the AACAP, our Kaumātua report, or would benefit from a discussion with the lead analyst on this work, please email [email protected] to explore her availability. “Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. Isaiah 43:18-19“ |
