Housing Insecurity in Aotearoa’s Older People

Explore key insights in this report on housing insecurity for older people in Aotearoa, highlighting ethnic and regional disparities

An analysis of Public Housing Register applications and Emergency Housing Special Needs Grants in over 55s in March of 2024

We are proud to share Housing Insecurity in Aotearoa’s Older People, a comprehensive analysis of public housing applications and emergency housing grants for those aged over 55. This report sheds light on critical disparities affecting older people in housing, including regional, ethnic, and systemic challenges.

Building on earlier work presented as an award-winning academic poster at the New Zealand Association of Gerontology (NZAG) Conference in Wellington, this report aims to drive meaningful discussion and action to address housing insecurity among older adults.

Key insights include:

  • Disparities in access to housing support across ethnic and regional lines.
  • Longer wait times for over 55s on the Public Housing Register compared to younger age groups.
  • Overrepresentation of Māori and Pacific Peoples in housing insecurity metrics.

This report is an essential resource for policymakers, community organisations, and advocates working to improve housing outcomes for older people in Aotearoa.
